ProgramThe Learning Gardens Program is an integrated component of the EcoSource Elementary Green Schools Program. Our garden coordinator works closely with administrators, staff, students and community members to create a garden design that reflects the needs and interests of the school community. By engaging many stakeholders in the project, a Learning Garden builds on the EcoSource philosophy of a whole school participatory approach to sustainability. Some gardens focus on shade or habitat spaces using native species. Schools with an interest and commitment to local food may also include organic vegetables in a garden space. A portion of food grown in school gardens is donated back to community food banks and meal programs to share the harvest and increase students' understanding of food security issues. School planting events engage many staff, students and community members, and the process is rounded out with student and staff workshop components designed to support the school in using and maintaining the garden. All expenses of the EcoSource School Learning Gardens Program including garden materials and staff support are provided by EcoSource through our generous funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The garden coordinator also supports schools wishing to increase the size and scope of a school garden project through individual school fundraising efforts. Garden projects are also supported by the Meridian Credit Union Good Neighbour Fund, Loblaws Canada, and generous community donations.
