Secondary Green Schools

EcoSource Secondary Green Schools Program

The EcoSource Secondary Green Schools Program is designed to support Mississauga high schools in waste reduction efforts. The Program builds on the Elementary Green Schools Program and adopts the principles of whole school participation and “walking the talk”!

The Program recognizes the powerful role of today’s high school students and staff in helping to meet regional waste reduction targets. Students gain experience by participating in waste management strategies for their school including hands-on projects, workshops, and events.  We believe that most people are ready and willing to make changes – they just need information, support and positive solutions!

Is the EcoSource Secondary Green Schools Program right for my school?

If your school is interested in addressing consumption and waste management then EcoSource’s Secondary Green Schools Program is ready to help!  Schools are required to have support from the principal, the custodial staff, at least 2 key teachers, and a willing student body prior to the school year in which they will participate.  The Program is a whole school effort aimed at raising awareness and reducing waste. Each person in the school community will have opportunity to contribute in ways big and small!

What do you mean by “waste management”?

The EcoSource Secondary Green Schools Program works to divert waste from ending up in landfills.  EcoSource, in partnership with teachers and students, works to educate the school community by implementing waste management strategies.  These strategies are based on the needs and capacity identified by each school to establish long term waste reduction.

Facilitated by EcoSource staff, each school will conduct a waste audit at the beginning of the school year to develop a baseline for improvement.  Each school will participate in a minimum of three waste reduction initiatives throughout the school year to address areas of concern.   At the end of the school year, another waste audit will be conducted to determine the amount of waste reduction, to locate areas for future improvement, and to celebrate successes!

An EcoSource staff member facilitates all aspects of waste related project planning, implementation, evaluation and celebration.

Celebration!

Schools who participate in the EcoSource Green Schools Program work hard to reduce consumption and waste and EcoSource acknowledges the effort with a year end celebration!
