NewsEcoSource's Youth and Local Food Program taught a series of workshops at St. John's school in Burlington, October 2008. Shortly thereafter, our attention was brought to this article published in a local paper: SPREADING THE WORD about LOCAL FOOD From: "Uncertain Economic Times" By Joelle Goddard-Cooling, published in SNAP Burlington, October 2008-
"I was wondering how to wrap this article up—needed one more inspiring thought. I got it, from a friend's son, who is eight years old. After buying an apple from the local Boy Scouts, Owen said to his mom-"That is great-we are buying locally, and that is good for the environment." When I asked him to elaborate, he told me that someone came into his class to talk about the carbon footprint left by an airplane flying in product from other countries and how the footprint is so much smaller if a local truck delivers the product. Doesn't get simpler then that. From the mouth of babes. This gave me more optimism then anything." Archives |
