Green Schools
The Green Schools program is an empowering partnership between EcoSource and selected elementary schools. This engaging one year program is designed to support staff and students in greening school culture and practices. The program provides workshops, waste audits, school-wide waste reduction initiatives, teacher professional development, and a dedicated EcoSource staff person to coordinate this full year of programming.
The Green Schools program aims to minimize the gaps between what we teach and what we do. Rather than simply discussing environmental issues, we support schools in conveying coherent messaging to students by role modeling environmentally responsible behaviour. The program takes a whole-school approach to environmental education by engaging teachers, administrators, custodians, and students. Throughout the course of the year, EcoSource facilitates activities that focus on waste reduction, supporting schools in developing practices that better value the planet’s resources.
All program related expenses are covered by EcoSource.
The Green Schools Program consists of the following program components:
- A dedicated EcoSource coordinator to facilitate the Elementary Green Schools program in collaboration with your school from September to June
- A minimum of three school-wide waste reduction initiatives that help students learn about waste reduction through hands-on activities
- An in-depth school waste audit, which gives students the opportunity to reflect on what they are buying and throwing away, and how these decisions impact our biosphere
- Professional development for staff, including workshops for all staff and a subsidized summer teacher education program
- A grade-specific, curriculum-connected workshop delivered to every class
- An end-of-year Green Schools Celebration
- Upon program completion, entrance into the Green Schools Alumni Network
The Green Schools program accepts three elementary schools in Mississauga every year.
