The Community Gardens Program builds off the successful pilot partnership that EcoSource developed with the City of Mississauga and Evergreen in creating the first community garden on public land in Mississauga in 2006 - the Garden of the Valley Community Garden at Mississauga Valley Park.
Our Community Gardens are community-based, food focused gardens which involve individual plots for participating gardeners as well as a collective "community plots," that produces food for donation to local food banks. Through our partnership with the MIAG Centre for Diverse Women & Families and the City of Mississauga, we strive to celebrate the diversity of Mississauga communities, share our experiences and grow healthy, organic food.
Since its inception, the Community Gardens Program has led the process in setting up the following 3 gardens on City owned land:
Garden of the Valley Community Garden
Hillside Park Community Garden
Malton Community Garden
Parkway Green Community Garden and Orchard!
In 2011 we are also excited to introduce the Habitat Garden Education Project -- where we are working to develop and understand native habitat spaces at all four community garden sites. Visit our events page or check out our spring 2011 garden newsletter for workshop and activity dates! The 2011 Habitat Garden Education Project is delivered in partnership with the City of Mississauga, the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, with generous support from the Sobeys Earth Day Canada Community Environment Fund.
The Community Gardens Program also offers mentoring support to community groups interested in establishing their own garden projects. We have worked with:
Sahara Seniors Garden at Punjabi Community Health Services
Palgrave Environmental Committee
Village Keepers Day Care Cooperative
